Based on research before arriving in Colombia, I thought that Tunja was just a drab city and a bus hub. I had not planned on spending any time there. After Monguí, I originally intended to take the three-bus trip back to Villa de Leyva for a single night before moving on to Barichara. Given that I had already spent several nights in VdL which were less than thrilling, I decided I could cut out a couple of bus rides over the next two days and spend the night in Tunja. I would take the bus from Monguí to Sogomosa and then a second bus to Tunja.
Tunja turned out to be a please surprise. The area around Bolívar Plaza was clean and vibrant. There were even some upscale shops and coffee houses in the area.
The best discovery was the boutique hotel, Inn Aroma del Bosque Pasado. Besides having the best name of any place I stayed in Colombia, it was also an outstanding little hotel in every way. The host, Paola, seemed to work 24 hours. She was kind and helpful beyond measure. She also gave me an aromática on arrival and provided an incredible breakfast. I was sorry that I only could stay for one day. When I am back in that area, I will figure out a way to stay longer and will definitely stay at this hotel. No website so I included the link to the hotel on Booking.com.
Only a few photos from the plaza.
