Although the Giant Anteater is one of the most sought-after animals for viewing in los Llanos, it is actually difficult to see. The Giant Anteater can be seen at dawn or just after and just before dusk foraging for...ants. It is usually solo and can be spooked, quickly running for cover.
The Giant Anteater is terrestrial, while its cousin, the Tamandua, is arboreal.
Our guide Andrés spotted one at first light and we had to run at full speed for several minutes to get into a position for good photos without scaring it. Luckily, our anteater was busy foraging and was not interested in us. You can tell by the comparison to the horses as shown in the photos below, the Giant Anteater really is a giant! Its tail is spectacular.
Wow, that is a once in a lifetime viewing. Amazing creature!
