The section is much farther from Villavieja than Cusco - probably a 45 minute motorcycle ride from el pueblo. The landscape is very ash-like and looks like something from another planet.
The hotel owner told me I might want to consider a guide. I looked at the photo of the trail and took a photo. How hard could it be?
After walking for an hour and a half, I was completely lost. I turned around but realized quickly that I had no idea which of the main criss-crossing trails I had come in on. I wandered around for more than an hour, coming to impassible spots like the one in the photo below, so I had to backtrack. Eventually, I decided that I had to climb out and that hopefully I would be near a house or a road. When I finally made it up the side of a cliff I was less than 200 yards from the road and the entrance.
