Tayrona National Park is the most visited national park in Colombia and for good reason. It is located on the Caribbean only a few minutes from Santa Marta. It has absolutely beautiful beaches with crystal clear blue waters.
I took the bus from Riohacha to Santa Marta and hopped off just west of the el Zaino PNN Tayrona entrance. I would be staying at Eco Hostal Yuluka from March 11-15, 2020.
This was a great hostal comprised of separate cabinas each with its own deck and hammock. Shared dormitory rooms were also available. The hostal provided free transportation daily to the el Zaino entrance. There were an array of choices for returning the 2-3 kilometers to the hostal - local bus, taxi, motorcycle or bicycle.
I loved the hostal. The cabina was big and rustic-looking and the bathroom had a hot tub bigger than most bathrooms. A restaurant and bar were onsite and the food was great. Breakfast was included and dinner was available at a very reasonable price. The típico meal (see photo below) was huge and cost less than U.S. $ 6.00. The hostal does not have a website but a Booking.com link is provided above.
When I arrived at the hostal on March 11, I knew that COVID-19 was out there, but it felt WAY out there. By the time, I left for Barranquilla on March 15, it was beginning to loom large in my plans.
