Los Chinchorros - La Guajira Peninsula - Colombia March 2020

One of the most interesting aspects of a tour to la Guajira is the accommodations. If you are planning to make a visit, it would be best to do a little research so that you can be prepared for this aspect.

With a tour, you can request to stay in a room or you can sleep in a chinchorro. A chinchorro is a special hammock made by the Wayuu. It is beautiful and sturdy. Interestingly, I was the only one in our group to request a chinchorro. I could not imagine visiting la Guajira without taking advantage of the full experience.

On our first night, we stayed relatively near Cabo de Vela which is one of the most visited spots in la Guajira. On the second night, we stayed farther north, not far from Bahía Hondita.

On the first night, my chinchorro was located in a separate little structure about 100 meters from the Caribbean shore. As you can see from the second photo below, it was an open-air enclosure that had an even smaller "dressing room". It was easy to sleep with no sound but the waves crashing on the rocks.

The second night my chinchorro was located in a larger open air space where several other workers slept (see the third photo below).

The bathroom facilities are the most amusing part. There is an enclosure that looks like a shower, but it is "manual". In other words, a worker will bring up a bucket full of cold water with a large cup and you can proceed to take your "shower" as you like.

The toilets were also an adventure. No flushing. Just another big bucket of water with a large cup that you poured into the bowl after you completed whatever it is you intended to do in the toilet.

Sometimes you need to get outside your comfort zone to experience the world. I loved it.
