La Guajira - Macuira Tours and Gas in La Guajira - Colombia March 2020

I booked through Macuira Tours located in Riohacha. If you are going to the peninsula, I would strongly recommend using a tour company and Macuira was excellent. On my tour, there were six of us plus our "guide" Uro. I don't think that was really his name, but that was the closest I could get.

There were six of us in addition to Uro - a couple from Mexico who spoke English, a couple from Medellín who did not, a woman from France who spoke no Spanish and very little English. It was an interesting group and communication was an adventure in and of itself. Uro spoke Wayuu and Spanish but not a word of English. In fact, Uro explained in the beginning that he was not really a guide, but a driver. He would take us to a location, give us a couple of minutes worth of information about how long we were staying and where to meet and that was it. The three of us who spoke English would then do our best to explain to the French woman whatever instructions Uro provided.

I booked "Plan Yosu" which included three full days and two nights. Meals and accommodations were included in the price. On the first morning, Uro made the rounds and picked us up from our various accommodations in Riohacha about 8:00 AM. He deposited us back about 3:00 in the afternoon of the third day. All of the drives were long, hard and dusty but the scenery was beyond belief.

There are no gas stations in the upper La Guajira peninsula. You buy gas from delivery trucks at a tiny crossroads. Pick-up trucks pull in loaded with large barrels full of gas. The gas is then transferred to smaller container and then to a bucket of about two liters from which it is poured into the vehicle. That's Udo on the right in the first photo.
