One of the words for "turtle" or "tortoise" en Spanish is "galápago". The early Spanish visitors to the Galápagos Islands encountered so many of these giant tortoises that they named the chain of islands after them. The giant tortoises are an iconic symbol of the islands and one of the main reasons (along with endemic bird species) that people visit.
These giant and prehistoric-looking creatures, as adults, can weigh between 600-1,000 pounds. They can live to be more than 100 years old. There are more than a dozen subspecies of the giant tortoise although at least two are extinct. Most of the others are endemic to the Galápagos with many of the subspecies found only on one of the islands.
