El Carnaval de Barranquilla/Barranquilla Carnival is the second largest carnival in South America behind only Rio. You can find hundreds of posts and descriptions with a simple internet search. Barranquilla is a relatively large city on the Caribbean coast.
The Carnaval is full of parades, street parties and concerts, and the city more or less completely shuts down for the four days of official Carnaval events. More Colombians attend than tourists and almost everyone dresses up in some kind of colorful outfits.
On February 20, I flew from Bucaramanga to join my family, Sossity and John, who I had convinced to fly from Austin to meet me. Pretty spunky of them.
If you are planning to attend, you should book AT LEAST six months in advance. We stayed at Hotel Yivinaca which, on its face, seemed worse than it turned out. While the rooms were little dark caverns, it was comparatively inexpensive and the staff was a riot. It wasn't near any of the Carnaval activities, but we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a taxi. Scores of restaurants on the street close to the hotel.
Photos are of us at various stages of Carnaval activities. Also, my favorite restaurant name in Barranquilla.
