Many official activities are scheduled during Carnaval. There is a huge concert and the coronation of the queen. Although we got swept up into the line for that event, we never made it inside. This is followed by three days of parades and then the symbolic "burial" of Joselito which consists of a number of neighborhood smaller parades which commemorate the end of Carnaval for the year. There is also a pre-opening day event with lots of music as well as a "battle of the bands" which lasts from about 6:00 PM until dawn the next morning.
The three official parades/desfiles are LONG. Luckily we had purchased tickets in a palco (bleachers) that was covered. We made it through a good four hours of the first parade. The second day, we returned for two-three hours of the parade and did not come back for the third.
We did attend the concert the night before the official parades started, a number of street parties after the official parades and, of course, the burial of Joselito.
The photos below are from the two days of official parades we attended.
A video from the second parade.
