Camarones and Los Flamencos - Colombia March 7, 2020

ezflaw

From Riohacha I hired a birding guide with Tocuyo Birding. He took me to Camarones where we birded town and the surrounding area and Los Flamencos Santuario de Fauna y Flora/The Flamingos Wildlife Sanctuary.

We were able to see the flamingos and he was able to get my on some rare endemics for the area including Vermilion Cardinal and the Tocuyo Sparrow. As you can see from the photos below we were joined by a number of other resident bird guides.

Camarones is dry and arid and serves as an excellent introduction to Alta Guajira (the upper Guajira Peninsula). A number of posts from my three day visit to that area follow this point.

My birding buddies at Camarones.

Three curious and friendly Wayuu teenagers. We birding on their property and they served as "mini-guides".

Intro to the reserve.

Video of the area surrounding Camarones and an entry to the feel of La Guajira Peninsula.

After Tocoya Sparrow, Vermilion Flycatcher is the most sought-after bird in the Camarones area.
