After returning to San Carlos de Bariloche, we spent only one night there. After observing the spaceship-like clouds at sunset, we flew farther south to El Calafate.
El Calafate is the jumping off spot for tours to one of the most spectacular glaciers in Argentina, Perito Moreno. You can take a boat to very near the edge of the glacier and there are numerous trails that offer incredible views of it. Many large icebergs were floating just below the glacier face. In the last video, we happened to catch the end of a calving from the glacier.
After El Calafate, we again flew south to Ushuaia which is the most southern point in Argentina with an airport for commercial flights.
We took two different tours from Ushuaia - one by catamaran into the famous Beagle Channel and one by bus to Tierra del Fuego National Park. We were WAY far south in Argentina.
In the Beagle Channel, we crossed the border into Chile. We also passed very close to an island full of Magellanic Cormorants, gulls and penguins. Also below, photos from our apartment building into the channel and the mountains in Chile.
A few final photos from Argentina. Sorry if they are repeats from previous posts.
Before leaving the country, we did spend a week in Rosario. We would not recommend wasting time here and, if we had to do it over again, we would pass. We did not find the city very welcoming or inviting, and it did not have much to offer. It does happen to be the birthplace of Che Guevara, but there is nothing more than a sign in front of the home where he was born. We also managed to capture this close-up of a Red-capped Cardinal while visiting one of the parks there.
A trip to Argentina would not be complete without a visit to the stadium of the world-famous Boca Juniors fútbol club. Also, without a doubt as evidenced by this 20-story photo of him, Argentina loves Lionel Messi.
After returning to Buenos Aires for yet another week, we made a weekend visit to La Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. On February 2, we said good-bye to Argentina and took our Aerolíneas Argentinas flight to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia.
Those icebergs are gorgeous!
What an epic journey to the very tip of South America! Love that red-capped Cardinal. Also the calving of the glacier. Not a fan of Che but interesting that they didn't turn his home into a museum. Also interesting is the Malvinas-related billboard.
Great pics and stories as always. Keep sharing please!
