Mexico 2023 - Mexico City

We spent a couple of months in Mexico recently from the end of July until the end of September. Our main stops included Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Guadalajara (and the Tequila pueblo) and Merida (I am using the English spelling of the country and cities without accent marks).

Our first stop was Mexico City. We had carved our expectations from Isabel's visit more than 40 years ago and everything else that we had heard and read. What we experienced was almost 100% the opposite of what we had expected. Instead of a dirty city full of smog, we found a clean and clear city. Instead of a drab city, we found a modern and vibrant city.

The city has preserved its history and architecture especially well, but it is now full of life with incredible restaurants from street vendors to high-end joints in every block and on every corner. The city and country have focused more on the presentation and marketing of coffee so we also found excellent cafes and outstanding coffee. Again, this was all balanced against the beautiful and ornate structures and a massive skyline.

All in all, we loved it. In our more than eight months of traveling, it rivaled Medellin for our favorite city.

Without honing it down, we could easily create five blog posts from the photos. I am trying to cram it all in to one or two. I can label a few of these included here, but I have already forgotten the site of many of them.

The Angel of Independence (El Ángel de La Independencia) is an iconic structure built in 1910 during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz. It is located in Paseo de la Reforma, also a famous boulevard in Mexico City. The Angel has a long and interesting history.

One of many skylines in the city

The incredible central post office which is still in use. We saw workers sorting letters by hand.

El Museo Nacional de Arte is an example of an older building with a beautiful ornate facade.

We stayed in Roma Norte. This area is very safe with great restaurants and small, exquisitely designed buildings. Lots of good coffee as well. Roma Sur and La Condesa are similar and adjacent. Mexico City is full of taco joints with every kind of taco imaginable.

Mercado Roma is a single location that has a number of small restaurants and bars, all indoors with a large common seating area.

Incredible organ in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City. Not sure about the other two photos.

From Templo Mayor in the historic center

Frida Kahlo house in the Coyoacan zone with artwork by Diego Rivera. Everybody knows of her but not necessarily about her. She was incredibly interesting and talented.

Other sights around the city.

I used google lens and it identified the door as Iglesia de Santa Ines, You have so many amazing photos of such a lovely city. I have learned some about Freda Kahlo from a cousin in California. Definitely interesting. Y'all keep traveling and we'll keep following.
