Copalinga Lodge - Parque Nacional Podocarpus

ezflaw

We spent the last few days of June 2023 at Copalinga Lodge, another lodge operated by Fundación Jocotoco. The weather was a bit warmer here than Casa Simpson, but still plenty of fog and rain. This lodge is located on the northern edge of Parque Nacional Podocarpus, a huge park covering much of the southeastern corner of Ecuador near the Peru border. Several bird species here differed from those at Casa Simpson, but there was some overlap. While tanagers were a bit easier to see, in hindsight, we probably would not revisit either of these lodges. There are many other birding lodge options throughout Ecuador, especially in the Mindo area in the north. We visited Sachatamia Lodge in that zone. That was my second visit to this lodge and it is wonderful. Our next and final post from this three-month trip through Ecuador will be from Sachatamia.

I have included a few photos below:

Green-and-gold Tanager and Green Honeycreeper (female)

Gray Tinamou - easily seen and heard here but a rarity elsewhere

Golden Tanager

Violet-fronted Brilliant

Male Green Honeycreeper

Such lush beauty. It is surely almost a spiritual experience. The birds are so colorful. Well, except for the grey tinamou. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
