Isabel and I started our Colombia 2023 adventure on February 3rd. We flew from San José, Costa Rica to Bogotá, Colombia. On February 4th, we took a bus three hours north to Tunja which is the capital of Boyacá Department.

Although Tunja is one of the largest cities in northern Colombia, (population of about 175,000), it is not a noted tourist stop. We stayed here mainly because it was centrally located for our next visits to the smaller pueblo patrimonios of Villa de Leyva, Monguí and Barichara. The city is a bit chilly because of its high altitude of over 2700 meters/9,000 feet. Tunja also has a good co-working space, Nexo, which Isabel used to teach her Spanish classes.

Amasijos, one of the best and most unique restaurants in Tunja. It is famous for its sopa de dulce con queso (sweet soup with cheese).
Lots of great coffee spots in Tunja (and in most towns and cities in Colombia). Aquí y Ahora was one of our favorites. While this photo shows it as empty, we had to leave on our first attempt as it became inundated by about 75 bikers.

Tunja boasts many beautiful old churches. A couple of photos of Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora del Milagro.
Next posts are from Villa de Leyva which is a short one-hour bus ride from Tunja.
Off to an adventurous start! Enjoy!!
