Riobamba - Gateway to Chimborazo Volcano

ezflaw

Standing alone, Riobamba would not likely be a stop on a tour of Ecuador. Most people visit and overnight in Riobamba because it is the starting point for most climbs and other visits to the Chimborazo Volcano. Chimborazo is one of the most impressive, most often visited and, I believe, the highest volcano in Ecuador at 6,263.47 m (20,549.4 ft).

Unfortunately for us, the weather did not particularly cooperate during our visit. It was cloudy, rainy, windy and cold. Still we managed to sneak in some quick views of the volcano and the surrounding landscape.

La iglesia de Balbanera is the oldest church that was constructed by the Spaniards in Ecuador (1524)

More churches and sites from around Riobamba.

I don't know why I'm called an "unknown member." You've known me since South Elementary ;-)

Ha, ha! I don't know why either, Charlotte! I do not have any control over it and cannot see how I can change it. It must have something to do with when you registered as a member. Maybe you can click on your membership information, but if not just start all over a sign up again as a new member! I always know it is you because, yes it shows you as an "unknown member"!

Not 2 minutes before I opened your blog, I first saw the name "Riobamba." I subscribe to a newsletter/magazine, "International Living," and today's newsletter promised me I could move to Cuenca, Ecuador," where I "could live an upper-middle-class life on $1,800 a month—housekeeper, gardener, dinners out included." But after having altitude sickness in Breckinridge, Colorado, last week, I looked for some lower altitude towns in Ecuador and found Loja and Riobamba. Your description of the weather, however, has ruled out Riobamba. We were in the Breckenridge area for a month in 2021, and I had no altitude problems; but that time, we drove up. If we ever fly in again, I've been told to spend a night or two in…

I will be putting up a post soon about Cuenca. I have to tell you that we absolutely loved it. In our five+ months of traveling, Cuenca is our second favorite city, only slightly behind Medellin. Unfortunately, except for Guayaquil, which I would avoid at all costs, all other major airports are in the Andes (Quito and Cuenca) at high altitudes. I do not know of any way to work your way up to Cuenca. I can only tell you that you would eventually get used to it. Baños was great also, but you likely would have to fly to Quito or Cuenca to get there. Loja is in the Andes as well and, unfortunately, cold and with…
