After leaving Panajachel and Lake Atitlán, we took a shuttle just over an hour south to Los Tarrales Natural Reserve. The reserve is huge with kilometers of trails and sits at the foot of Volcán Atitlán. It is also a working coffee plantation that at any given time can have as many as 25 families living and working in the reserve.
We spent three nights there. We birded on our own the afternoon we arrived, then with Freddy a great birding guide the next day and finally birded on our own on our final full day.
Not many photos of birds or the place, but the link above provides a great overview. We saw around 100 species in the reserve, but opted out of the ridiculously difficult trek to see the Horned Guan which required getting on the road at about 3:00 AM.
I was able to see seven life birds. Some of the best birds we saw included numerous Cinnamon Hummingbirds, White-eared Hummingbird, a pair of Mottled Owls and Pacific Parakeet.
Yellow-winged Tanager
Collared Aracari
Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Velasquez's subspecies)
Mottled Owl
Amazon Kingfisher
Cinnamon Hummingbird
Location of Los Tarrales and route from Panajachel. Next stop - Antigua to the east but you have to drive around the south side of the active Volcán de Fuego to get there.
Amazing birds. The owls were a great find! Thanks for sharing.
