In March 2019, I took the bus from Calle Matapalo to Grecia, changed buses in Grecia, took the bus to San José, then walked to the bus station for the third and final 5 hour bus ride from San José to El Colibrí Lodge between Punta Uva and Mazanillo, Limon Province. These spots are near the very southern end of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and very close to the Panama border.
I loved the Caribbean coast and the lodge owners were helpful and friendly. They served a wonderful breakfast on the deck of the cabina every morning. The only issue is that it is a fairly long walk from the lodge to any restaurants - Manzanillo in one direction and Punta Uva in the other. The Caribbean influence is evident in the lifestyle, the languages and dialect and especially the spicy food. The food was some of the best I have had in Costa Rica.
I spent five nights there and visited the Gandoca-Manzanillo Reserve and Ara Manzanillo which is the site of an organization assisting the endangered Great Green Macaw now staging a comeback in the area.
Photos include Mono Congo (Mantled Howler Monkey), Pale-billed Woodpecker and Collared Plover.
